Cozette Hayes

Cozette Hayes, 58, passed away on October 26, 2024. Born on July 3, 1966, in Memphis, Tennessee, she was the beloved daughter of Shirley Watson and cherished sister to Carla Hayes, Coretta Watson, and Frankie Watson. Cozette moved to Oakland, California during her pre-teen years, where she later graduated from Castlemont High School in 1985. She was a proud and dedicated mother to her only child, DeCarlos Spencer, born April 24, 1989. Cozette also warmly and boldly embraced her roles as a loving daughter, older sister, little sister, auntie, niece, cousin, friend, and a newly proud grandmother. For almost 20 years, Cozette worked at UPS, where her strong work ethic and dedication were evident. Outside of work, she had a passion for reading and writing. She loved dancing around the house to her favorite music and she never missed an episode of Divorce Court. Before her stroke in 2010, Cozette spent most of her free time with friends and family. Cozette was known for her candor and honesty and her ability to speak her mind. She never hesitated to express her thoughts. Those who knew her will remember her as loving and caring and strong-willed. Cozette is survived by her mother, Shirley Watson; her grandmother Eula Jackson, her siblings Carla Hayes, Coretta Watson; Frankie Watson; as well as her son DeCarlos Spencer and grandchildren Madison Skye Spencer and Chloe Rae Spencer; along with a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends who will forever cherish her memory. Cozette’s vibrant spirit and unwavering love will remain in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know her. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who visited Cozette in the hospital, sent cards and flowers, called, and texted, and/or provided food and words of encouragement to the family. Your kindness, support, and prayers have meant the world to us. The family would also like to thank Cozette’s son, DeCarlos Spencer, and nephew, Aaron St. Charles, for the love and around the clock care they provided to Cozette during her last few months on earth.
